named until 2002 as the International Film Festival (Festival international du film) and known in English as the Cannes Film Festival 2017, is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films of all genres, including documentaries, from all around the world. Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.
On 1 July 2014, co-founder and former head of French pay-TV operator Canal+ Pierre Lescure took over as President of the festival. The Board of Directors also appointed Gilles Jacob as Honorary President of the festival.
The 2016 Cannes Film Festival took place between 11 and 22 May 2016. Australian film director George Miller was the President of the Jury. I, Daniel Blake, directed by British director Ken Loach, won the Palme d’Or.
In 2017, The Festival de Cannes will celebrate its 70th anniversary edition from May 17 to 28.
The Cannes Film Festival is the largest of all film festivals, and is the festival that awards the coveted Palme d’Or award, a.k.a. the Golden Palm Award for the best film.
